What's the difference between Muay Thai and Muay Boran training?
Our method of Muay Thai training incorporates some of the emphasis of the traditional style as well as the modern sport approach. We will be focusing on building a strong base and proper technique to maximize the balance, speed, and power of the striking techniques. Focus mitts and Thai pads will be used to work on speed, power, accuracy, and timing. Once a striking base is established, we move on to defense, counters, and more advanced tactics/combinations.
Muay Boran training aims to teach the art of traditional Thai boxing as it is taught in Thailand. Similar to "Kata's", striking forms (Awut: Mahd, Sok, Khao, Dtae, Teep) are taught to understand the different weapons of Muay Boran. Steps and footwork drills are also incorporated in to the curriculum. Movements and striking commands are taught partially in Thai as well as English. Like Muay Thai, we will begin with your base and offensive strikes. From there we will move on to defense, application of movements, and also some of the more advanced techniques.

When are your beginner classes?
The best time for beginners to try the class is within the first two weeks of the month. During this week we cover basics, foundations, and offensive transitions. As the weeks go on we tie in defense and application of the skills covered throughout the month. This does not mean that beginners cannot try these classes, but it would be easier to start from the beginning and establish a base.
When are the Muay Boran classes?
At the moment, I am only offering regularly scheduled Muay Boran style classes based on interest in our private or small group settings. It will also be taught on occasion as a specialty class in our All Levels classes.

Are there free trials to your classes?
We do not offer free trials, but individuals are welcome to try a class as a drop in student ($25/class)
Do you teach youth classes?
At the moment, no (aside from personal training). Students must be at least 14 years old to participate in the group Muay Thai classes. A parent/guardian will also need to be present to sign the waiver form.
Where do I park for your group classes?
Officially there is only street parking. Many cars park alongside the building, and do not appear to get ticketed, but it is at your own risk. Street parking is free after 6:00pm. There are some paid lots nearby (Salt at Kaka'ako, Down to Earth), however, since we are not affiliated with them, we cannot validate your parking.
What type of equipment do I need?
For most classes you will only need hand wraps and gloves to protect your hands and to support your wrists. For our defensive and sparring classes, shin pads and a mouth guard will be required. Our class gets hot, you will also want to bring a hand towel and water.
What type of equipment can be purchased at your gym?
Our equipment stock varies, but we typically carry:
*Please note that our equipment purchases are cash only*
- 12oz & 14oz gloves
- Fairtex hand wraps
- Shin guards
- Mouth guards
- Elbow pads
- Ankle supports
- Thai skip ropes
- Thai balm/liniment
- We also have t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, and Muay Thai shorts.

Do I need to be in shape?
No. Physical fitness, stamina, and endurance will increase gradually with training. In our group lessons everyone works at their own pace.
For 1:1 lessons we work at the pace and abilities of my students, and cater each lesson to the individual.

Is experience necessary?
Martial arts experience is not necessary for training. While at times it can be helpful, in some cases I find that it can hinder the learning of a student who is new to the art. Zero experience = zero bad habits. We train all students from the ground up with a firm emphasis on base and technique. Experience is only necessary for our Level 2 classes.
Do I need to fight competitively?
Although Muay Thai is a competitive sport, fighting and competition are strictly optional and are not required for training. Our style focuses more on teaching for learning, self improvement, and self defense; rather than sport and competition.
